He was born in Normandy and served in the Franco-Prussian War, which would become the subject of some of his best-known stories. Maupassant enjoyed financial and critical success before illness led to his death in an asylum at the age of forty-two.\nIrène Némirovsky was born in Kiev in 1903, the daughter of a successful Jewish banker. In 1918 her family fled the Russian Revolution for France where she became a bestselling novelist, author of \u003ci\u003eDavid Golder\u003c\/i\u003e,  \u003ci\u003eAll Our Worldly Goods, The Dogs and the Wolves \u003c\/i\u003eand other works published in her lifetime or soon after, such as the posthumously published \u003ci\u003eSuite Française\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eFire in the Blood\u003c\/i\u003e. She was prevented from publishing when the Germans occupied France and moved with her husband and two small daughters from Paris to the safety of the small village of Issy-l'Evêque (in German occupied territory). It was here that Irène began writing \u003ci\u003eSuite Française\u003c\/i\u003e. She died in Auschwitz in 1942.\nAlphonse Daudet was born in Nimes in 1840. He made his name with gentle stories and novels portraying life in the French provinces, notably \u003ci\u003eLettres de mon Moulin\u003c\/i\u003e (1869). He died in 1897. His extraordinary notebooks detailing the effects of syphilis on his life were first published under the title \u003ci\u003eIn the Land of Pain\u003c\/i\u003e by Daudet's widow in 1931.
