Von 1972 bis 1978 studierte er an der Hochschule der Künste, Berlin, bei Professor Hans Jaenisch. 1977 gründete er mit Helmut Middendorf, Salome, Bernd Zimmer, Anne Jud, Berthold Schepers und Luciano Castelli die Galerie am Moritzplatz. 1978 erhielt er ein DAAD-Stipendium für einen Aufenthalt in New York. 1996 entwarf Fetting die Willy-Brandt-Skulptur für das Willy-Brandt-Haus in Berlin und verbrachte mehrere Studienaufenthalte in Kopenhagen.
