After a first volume of verse (1899), Hesse established his reputation with a series of lyrical romantic novels-\u003ci\u003ePeter\u003c\/i\u003e \u003ci\u003eCamenzind \u003c\/i\u003e(1904), \u003ci\u003eUnterm Rad (The Prodigy, \u003c\/i\u003e1906), \u003ci\u003eGertrud \u003c\/i\u003e(1910) and the short story, \u003ci\u003eKnulp \u003c\/i\u003e(1915). After a visit to India in 1911 he moved to Switzerland and worked for the Red Cross during the First World War. He was denounced in Germany and settled permanently in Switzerland, where he established himself as one of the greatest literary figures in the German-speaking world. His humanity, his searching philosophy developed further in such novels as \u003ci\u003eSiddhartha \u003c\/i\u003e(1922), \u003ci\u003eDer Steppenwolf\u003c\/i\u003e (1927), \u003ci\u003eNarziss and Goldmund \u003c\/i\u003e(1930) and \u003ci\u003eDas Glasperlenspiel (The Glass Bead\u003c\/i\u003e \u003ci\u003eGame, \u003c\/i\u003e1943), while his poems and critical writings won him a leading place among contemporary thinkers. Hesse won many literary awards, including the Nobel Prize in 1946.
