Her innovation in fiction brought her international renown. She was born in the Ukraine in 1920, but in the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Civil War, the family fled to Romania and eventually Brazil. She published her first novel, \u003ci\u003eNear to the Wildheart, \u003c\/i\u003ein 1943, when she was just twenty-three, and the next year was awarded the Graça Aranha Prize for the best first novel. She died in 1977, shortly after the publication of her final novel, \u003ci\u003eThe Hour of the Star\u003c\/i\u003e.\n\u003cb\u003eMargaret Jull Costa \u003c\/b\u003e has translated the works of many Spanish and Portuguese writers, among them novelists: Javier Marías, José Saramago and Eça de Queiroz, and poets: Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Mário de Sá-Carneiro, Fernando Pessoa and Ana Luísa Amaral.
