Andri Pol - Welt (Wendelin Hess)

Andri Pol's unmistakable style and ability to capture complex themes with precision have made him one of the most distinguished voices in international contemporary documentary photography. His portraits appear spontaneous yet carefully composed. His reportage offers surprising perspectives on social, cultural, and political realities and identities. With his pictures and photo columns, Pol has contributed to the visual language of major Swiss and German magazines and newspapers.

Andri Pol-Welt is part of a comprehensive multi-volume presentation of his oeuvre. Pol shoots his reportage, portraits, and observations of everyday life around the globe, with recurring geographical focuses in his native Switzerland, Japan, and China. The scope ranges from early works to current long-term and book projects. Some 700 plates are supplemented with a contextual essay by historian and author Valentin Groebner. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Fotostiftung Schweiz in Winterthur, Andri Pol-Welt is a visually astute, highly original invitation to marvel, smile, and discover.

Valentin Groebner is a professor of medieval and Renaissance history at the University of Lucerne. In 2024 he was awarded the Hamburg-based Aby Warburg Foundation's Scholar's Prize.
