Brigitte Kowanz - Light is what we see (Ralph Gleis)

This volume presents the art of light in all its facets. Using materials such as mirrors, black light, neon tubes and glass bottles, Brigitte Kowanz has created objects and spatial artworks in which she stages light. What is light? is the central question of her oeuvre. Light is what we see is the artists answer. Light helps us to see: it makes everything visible, yet remains invisible itself. Brigitte Kowanz engages with this paradox in her light-based art. This volume offers a retrospective experience of her oeuvre: alongside the central works, it includes iconic pieces showing that, even in the 1980s, she was engaging with topics that are current today, such as digitalization and new communication media in an information society.

Ralph Gleis war langjähriger Direktor der Alten Nationalgalerie in Berlin und Kurator zahlreicher Ausstellungen zur Kunst des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Seit 2025 ist er Generaldirektor der Albertina, Wien. Angela Stief ist seit 2020 Chefkuratorin für Kunst und Gegenwart an der Albertina, seit 2021 Direktorin der Albertina Modern.
