The official staff of the GDR State Security produced millions of photographs, but they themselves are rarely seen in them. In this way, the Stasi hid its secret-police work from the public. Now, for the first time, the people who normally stood behind the usually hidden surveillance cameras are themselves the topic of an illustrated book. This book is the result of extensive research in the Stasi Records Archive for photographs - most previously unpublished - of these employees of the GDR State Security. Supplemented by biographical sketches of the people photographed, it provides special insight into the everyday life of the secret police.

Philipp Springer ist Historiker und Fachbereichsleiter für Sonderausstellungen am Deutschen Historischen Museum. Zuvor war er Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Stasi-Unterlagen-Archiv.
