Er schrieb und illustrierte nahezu 50 Bücher voller schrulliger Verse für Kinder, mit denen Millionen Amerikaner bis heute lesen lernen. Seine Werke sind für ihre lustigen Reime und skurrilen Charaktere weltberühmt. 1984 Auszeichnung mit dem Pulitzerpreis. Der Autor verstarb 1991.
