Ikemura und Nolde (Distanz Verlag)

Celebrating Emil Nolde's 150th birthdayLeiko Ikemura (b. 1951 Tsu, Mie Prefecture, Japan; lives and works in Berlin and Cologne) has carefully studied various positions in classic European modernism, including the art of Odilon Redon and Emil Nolde. She has long been fascinated by Nolde's oeuvre, and some of her themes and motifs show remarkable similarities to his, though these parallels are not readily apparent to the casual beholder and the artist doesn't consciously pursue them. Their complexity is heightened by the fact that they reflect the relevance to Ikemura's art of the European context in which she works as well as a lasting echo of her Japanese roots. The exhibition at Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop, which was produced in close collaboration with the Nolde Foundation in Seebüll, is the first to present paintings and works on paper by these two outstanding artists in dialogue. Leiko Ikemura geboren 1951 in Tsu/Mie, Japan. Sie studierte an der staatlichen Universität Osaka und kam 1972 nach Europa, wo sie zunächst in Spanien, dann in Zürich lebte. 1983 wurde sie Stadtzeichnerin in Nürnberg und siedelte anschließend nach Köln über. Seit 1991 ist sie Professorin an der Hochschule der Künste Berlin. Emil Nolde, 1867-1956, Hauptvertreter des deutschen Expressionismus. Nach einer Ausbildung als Möbelzeichner und Holzschnitzer arbeitete Nolde als Lehrer an der Kunstgewerbeschule in St. Gallen. Von 1906-07 Mitglied der Brücke in Dresden. Im Dritten Reich war Nolde als 'entarteter' Künstler verfemt und wurde 1941 mit einem Malverbot belegt.
