Peace and conflict research is dominated by a Western-influenced concept of peace. How can a decolonial perspective be adopted in contrast to this? This qualitative study examines the Dakota and Lakota peoples' conceptions of peace in the United States in the context of comprehensive efforts towards decoloniality and sovereignty. Melanie Hussak elaborates on these concepts based on specific indigenous knowledge systems and highlights their implications for peace and conflict studies. She discusses how indigenous concepts of peace challenge hegemonic discourses and how experiences of peace and the resulting initiatives initiate transformation.
