Joel Meyerowitz begann 1962 mit Freunden wie Tony Ray-Jones und Garry Winogrand spontane Farbfotos auf den Straßen von New York zu machen. Als Instrument zur Veränderung der Einstellung zur Farbfotografie in den 1970er Jahren gilt er als Pionier, wichtiger Innovator und einflussreicher Lehrer.
