Portraits! (Sven Jakstat)

In this volume, nearly 90 portraits from the Gemäldegalerie and other collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin are juxtaposed in unusual pairings.Rather than being arranged by place and date of origin, paintings and sculptures from different eras and regions are paired and engage in dialogue with one another. These dialogues open up new perspectives on topics such as identity, beauty, power, and self-representation. All portraits are discussed in detail, and the catalogue entries offer a wealth of new insights into the artworks and the individuals depicted.
