»Smart Privacy in the Energy Sector. A Comparison of the Data Protection Requirements for Smart Metering in Germany and the United States«: This study compares the data protection requirements for smart metering in Germany and the United States. It demonstrates that the granular collection of energy consumption data constitutes a significant intrusion into personal privacy and that the German legal framework exhibits structural deficiencies. These findings are contrasted with U.S. law at both the federal and state level (California). The study concludes with a comparative analysis of selected aspects and proposals for reform.

The author studied law at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. As part of his doctoral research at Ruhr University Bochum, he completed a research fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (Visiting Scholar Program). He served his legal clerkship at the Düsseldorf Regional Court, with placements in Barcelona and Singapore. He currently practices as an attorney in Munich.
