In this study, Johannes Nagel examines a series of far-reaching Army and Navy reforms in the USA between 1865 and 1905 in a global context, with a particular focus on the societal effects of the First Globalization. Although security and empire-seeking played a role in these reforms, only adaptation to global norms and models can explain why they took the form they did - and why the U.S. began to shape itself into a European-style great military power.

Johannes Nagel is a historian with a special interest in social science methods. His main areas of research are the 19th and 20th centuries, the USA and Europe, and Military and Political History including the History of International Relations.
